Visualizing Detroit's Changing Racial Demographic
It is especially striking to examine maps of shifting racial demographics to visualize by whom the city was occupied over the years. These maps show the percent of the population of Detroit that African-Americans made up at the beginning of each decade from 1950-2010, excluding 1970 due to incomplete census data. As we will demonstrate, Detroit's unique status as a sprawling and majority African-American city have detrimental health outcomes for its residents. The darker shading on these maps indicates a higher percentage of African-Americans.
